Bridesmaids, choose them wisely!

“Asking someone to be a bridesmaid is one of the modern paradoxes,  no one actually wants to do it but everyone would be offended if you didn’t ask”  Mindy Kaling

Early Bridesmaids

Bridesmaids duties have changed dramatically since the early days of matrimony.

Traditionally there in case the bride died between betrothal and the wedding, the bridesmaid then had to take her place.  Have a look at your friends other halves girls.. can you imagine??

Family members were always chosen.  Bloodlines were to be untainted. Property ownership could also play a big part of who was chosen for you- you were usually married off to family or the bloke who’s family owned the field beside yours lol

The bridal party were all dressed identically with heavy veils to disguise which was the bride in case someone tried to kidnap the bride.

Please note following photograph is not one of ours.. we weren’t around then lol

Modern Day Bridesmaids

Hurrah! the world has moved on.  Be free to ask anyone to stand by your side.  Indeed chose your own spouse!

Being a bridesmaid is very important both on the day and in the run up to it.  Choosing dresses..definitely! Tasting cake? ..possibly!.  You will definitely be pampered along with your bride – what’s not to love?

Who should you choose?

Well, at the end of the day it’s up to you.   Personally, I would chose a bridesmaid with a great sense of humour as you will be spending lots of time together, including bathroom breaks (well someone has to hold the dress out of the way!)

A bridesmaid should be organised and unflappable:

  • need a safety pin – your bridesmaid should have it,
  • need your lippie topped up – bridesmaid!
  • stray hairs – bridesmaid should fix it
  • stuck in a corner with your boring uncle talking your ear off – bridesmaid needs to step up and save you.

And last but not least.  She/he organises your hen party.  Who do you trust to keep it classy?

So choose wisely girls ..
